Vote... Or Don't Bitch...
Nov. 4th, 2008 09:33 amUnless you have mitigating circumstances that do not allow you to share in that right...
However, with that said. I voted earlier this week by absentee ballot. I voted absentee because apparently Santa Clara County thought it was easier to have me vote absentee than to try and figure out which district I would be voting at and which poling place I would go to. It is what it is. So in honor of that and it being election day, this is how I voted. I share with you my thoughts on the matter.
President:
I voted Obama/Biden. While they don't do everything that I wish they would. I found Obama refreshing in his approach to how he talked to people rather than talking at people.
Local Measures:
The only one I cared about was B and that brings BART down to San Jose and connects the Bay Area rail loop, as well as connects Gilroy to the Bay area. Only happens if the State and Federal Government kicks in with money. Probably wont happen, but I voted for it anyway.
Propositions.
1A) SAFE, RELIABLE HIGH-SPEED PASSENGER TRAIN BOND ACT. Yes
- I voted yes on this because as much as we have the car culture ground into our brains as Californians, the rising need to be able to have reliable rail transport backbone through the state is needed. Its not going to be long from now, when we will likely be forced to take more and more green initiatives. So rather than trying to figure out how to pay for it then, I opted to start paying for it now.
2) STANDARDS FOR CONFINING FARM ANIMALS. INITIATIVE STATUTE. No
- I didn't really like this statute. It never came across to me as something that really mattered. While some of my friends will argue with me on this. I just really didn't care enough about this to vote yes on it.
3) CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL BOND ACT. GRANT PROGRAM. INITIATIVE STATUTE. Yes
- I can live without having medical insurance and having to pay out of pocket for healthcare, I'm an adult. Children should NEVER have to worry about access to healthcare, They have more pressing issues to worry about such as weather the boy on the playground likes them or not. Give back to them better than you got yourself.
4) WAITING PERIOD AND PARENTAL NOTIFICATION BEFORE TERMINATION OF MINOR’S PREGNANCY.
INITIATIVE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT. NO
- While I am not an avid fan of abortion as a means to an end. I simply refuse to accept limitations that would in essence federalize a womans body. Should children be having abortions, no. Is it a fact of life, yes. I would hope that the parents are brought in by the child to support them through this, but I also know that there are those parents that will force the child to carry to term. Id rather see parents cut out of the loop and it done safely than to see someone have to resort to a back alley Dr. That and well I didn't like this initiative when it wasn't trying to change the constitution. What makes them think I will like it now.
5) NONVIOLENT DRUG OFFENSES. SENTENCING,PAROLE AND REHABILITATION. INITIATIVE STATUTE. Yes
- I think the prisons are over crowded because of three strikes, if they can stop the madness that is a failed policy, then I'm all for it. Its not going to pass, but I can hope. Rehab is always better in my mind than incarceration.
6) POLICE AND LAW ENFORCEMENT FUNDING. CRIMINAL PENALTIES AND LAWS. INITIATIVE STATUTE. Yes
- Again with a failed policy and its outcomes, need to fund it to keep it afloat.
7) RENEWABLE ENERGY GENERATION. INITIATIVE STATUTE. Yes
- Green energy. 'Nuff Said. Though I think it should be free, but thats a fight I will take on another day.
8) ELIMINATES RIGHT OF SAME–SEX COUPLES TO MARRY. INITIATIVE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT. No
- Legislative gay bashing is still gay bashing. Fuck you Christian right and your separation of the other.
9) CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. VICTIMS’ RIGHTS. PAROLE. INITIATIVE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT AND STATUTE. No
- I didn't like this piece for one reason. It seemed to me that is was seeking to punish the accused more than it was trying to help the victim out. It will most likely pass, but htis is my thought on it.
10) ALTERNATIVE FUEL VEHICLES AND RENEWABLE ENERGY. BONDS. INITIATIVE STATUTE. Yes
- Alternative Fuels for the win.
11) REDISTRICTING. INITIATIVE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT AND STATUTE. No
- I leave governing of the state and their districts to them. If I'm not happy with someone I just do my best to vote them out. I hold the power of the pink slip.
12) VETERANS’ BOND ACT OF 2008. Yes
- I'm a veteran. You didn't think I wasn't going to vote for money to help a fellow veteran buy a home?
